Transend's general manager Transmission Services, Mike Hunnibell said that the project was a significant investment in the north-west to help ensure that the transmission system had sufficient capacity to meet the anticipated increase in demand for electricity over the next 15 years. "The new Burnie-Smithton 110,000 volt (110 kV) circuit has already increased the carrying capacity of the transmission system in the north-west," Mr Hunnibell said. "It has also improved the reliability and security of the electricity supply to the area. "We have now started work to upgrade the Burnie-Port Latta-Smithton 110 kV circuit," he said.
