Spanish coal mining firms have started to rehire workers to take advantage of an expected increase in orders from power utilities, thanks to an extra ?10/t ($11/t) subsidy toward the sale of indigenous coal. But the recent closure of mines and lay-offs mean that production of bituminous hard coal will be limited. Output from Spanish mines in July and August was “practically zero”, but picked up in September as utilities placed orders ahead of the new regulation and amid rising international prices for the mineral, Spanish coal sector association Carbunion said.
