For at least the fifth consecutive edition, the opening news pages in E&MJ report merger and acquisition activity among mining companies. This month, it's Kinross and Bema Gold on the precious metals side and the three-way deal (Rusal, Sual, and Glencore) to form a new leading aluminum company, United Company Rusal (UCR). This news breaks as Brazilian iron ore miner CVRD decides how it will integrate the Inco properties to become a new mining power house. The common denominator here again is Asia-both the demand for raw materials and the promise of new resources.
