Computer-aided fixture design (CAFD) has become a research focus in implementing flexible manufacturing systems and computer-integrated manufacturing systems. Fixture configuration design is an important issue in CAFD. In this article arepresentation strategy of modeling modular fixture elements and a methodology of automatically constructing the modular fixture element assembly relationship database are investigated. The assembly features of fixture elements are introduced to describethe fixture elements. Five basic mating relationships are defined between the assembly features of modular fixture elements. Four typical assembly types between fixture elements are discussed to establish the criteria of modular fixture assemblies.Mathematical model and implementation procedures of the reasoning assembly relationship are investigated. Illustration examples are presented.
