Daylighting Strategies: Life-Cycle Cost Modeling and Policy Implications for Emerging Technology

摘要

In the United States, facility lighting loads account for $15-23 billion annually in energy consumption. To help reduce these loads, passive solar energy strategies such as daylighting are often used. To evaluate daylighting strategies, we modeled the performance of a prototypical office facility using building energy simulation software and conducted life-cycle cost analysis using Monte Carlo simulation. Our findings show that electrochromic windows result in the lowest energy consumption; however, the most economically viable strategy was the advanced daylighting control system. Our simulations demonstrate the importance of considering economic incentive policies to make emerging daylighting technology more viable.
