The status of the Coenonympha taxon orientalis' Rebel, 1910, has been the subject of much controversy over the past years, the majority of researchers placing it as a subspecies of either C. gardetta (Pnmner, 1798) or C. leander (Esper, 1784), or possibly a member of the C. arcania (Linnaeus, 1761) species complex. Ova were obtained from females of both C. leander and C. orientalis, which were captured near Fiorina and Eptachori, Greece, respectively. The resulting larvae were reared in parallel in the U.K. on Festuca glauca Lamarck, which was present at both localities and assumed to be the host-plant at these locations. Pupae of the two taxa were compared with those of three subspecies of C. gardetta,, viz. C. gardetta gardetta, C. gardetta darwiniana Staudinger, 1871, and C. gardetta lecerfi de Lesse, 1941, as well as C. arcania and C. leander from Baile Herculane, Romania, reared on different occasions. Substantive differences were noticed between the pupae of C. orientalis and those of C. arcania and the three subspecies of C. gardetta, of which all three of the latter showed marked similarities as did those of C. leander from the different locations. It is concluded that the taxonC. orientalis is more closely related to C. leander than it is to C. gardetta or C. arcania.
