In horses, tracheal obstruction to airflow may be caused by intraluminal space-occupying lesions, tracheal ring deformities, or peritracheal compressive lesions. External compression by space-occupying masses (lymph node abscess, lipoma, mediastinal masses and tumours) may cause tracheal compression accompanied by respiratory stridor. Oesophageal disease resulting in compression or necrosis and deformation of the trachea combined with stridor and dyspnoea has previously been described in man. In this report, clinical, endoscopic and radiographic examinations of a tracheal obstruction are described, as well as deformity with stridor and dyspnoea secondary to oesophageal stricture and diverticula in a 10-year-old Friesian stallion.
