Compared to other parts of the respiratory system, diseases of the equine trachea are relatively rare. However, the trachea has a vital role in ventilation and respiratory defence, and compromise of this function can have serious and even life-threatening consequences. The case report in this issue by Grnvold et al. (2005) highlights the dramatic effects that disease (perforation) of the trachea can cause. Fortunately, in this case the consequences of the tracheal perforation were relatively mild, and the authors were able to manage the condition without needing to resort to surgery. The purpose of this article is to review the more commonly reported diseases of the equine trachea.
