The variability of the size and asymmetry of comb cells in Paravespula vulgaris and Vespa crarbo is analyzed and factors influencing these parameters are discussed. Paper wasps (Vespinae) usually make nests in different shelters (in tree hollows, in abandoned rodent burrows, under roofs of buildings, in hollows between walls. Wasps use wood as a building material. It is chewed and becomes a papery paste. This paste is used to create combs and nest covers. Wasps can build nests not only from wood andpaper, but also from gypsum, cement, and other free-flowing materials, which are bound by oral secretions (Ganor and Ishay, 1992). The number and size of combs increase as a family grows. Paravespula and Vespa nests often consist of 3 to 7 combs. However, the size and the number of combs may vary in depending on the configuration of a hollow (Eskov, 1983; Zanradnic and Salek, 1990). Under favorable conditions, wasp families increase in number; accordingly, their nests grow in size.
