The behaviour of low concentrations of selenium(VI) (sel-enate) and selenium(IV) (selenite) during the precipitation of sodium, potassium and ammonium jarosites was investigated. The selenate content of the jarosite species increased linearly as the Se(VI) concentration of the solution increased up to 2000 mg/L. Supporting mineralogical studies indicated that selenate substituted for sulphate in the jarosite structure with selenate contents up to 3.3 % being detected. A consequence is that increasing sulphate concentrations reduce the extent of selenate incorporation. As the concentration of Se(IV) increased up to 5000 mg/L, the selenite contents of the sodium jarosite increased lin-early and the SO4_ contents decreased in an inversely related manner. Experiments done in the presence of 1.15 M ZnSO4_ gave essentially the same results, indicating that selenite incorporation is not competitive with that of sulphate. Only sodium jarosite was detected in the products containing less than ~7 % SeO_3, but increasing amounts of a ferric selenite-sulphate phase and elemental selenium were evident in products having higher SeO_3 contents.
