With production volumes down on last year and no reported problems with quality, the Cyprus Potato Marketing Board is anticipating a smoother ride for the island's growers than in 2005. AS the first arrivals of spring potatoes from Cyprus hit Europeansupermarket shelves, growers will be keeping an anxious eye on the competition in the hope of avoiding last season's supply bottlenecks which caused prices to plummet. The island is set to produce around 28,000 tonnes of winter crop potatoes this season, of which 17-18,000 tonnes will be exported and the rest sold on the local market. This represents a significant increase on last season, when production reached 22,000 tonnes and exports 11,000 tonnes. Spring crop production, meanwhile, is set to reach 95,000-100,000 tonnes compared with 115,000 tonnes last year. Around 75,000 tonnes of this will go for export compared with 90,000 tonnes in 2005.
