T he summer garden is a color photograph; the winter garden moves toward black and white. Even in southern gardens, a faded wash of gray lies over the usually vibrant scene. In winter, we learn to appreciate a quieter beauty, one based on ordered andpleasingly contrasted textures of shrubs, trees, fences, and walls, all positioned with thought to how they appear when viewed from indoors. The verticality of trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and structures enlivens winter views, even after less-substantial perennials and annuals have been brought down by the weather. In fact, the winter garden is the structure—the permanent bones—of the garden.
