Belgian auction Veiling Hoogstraten expects strawberry volumes to reach record levels this season, according to marketing manager Jan Engelen. What volumes do you expect to produce this year and how does this compare with last season? Which varietiesare doing best and which are struggling? Jan Engelen: In 2011, we expect to see a small increase in our protected acreage for strawberry production. This will result in greater volumes at the beginning and end of the season. We are confident we will be able to reach 26,000 tonnes of strawberries this year, compared with last year's 25,500 tonnes. Our main variety remains Elsanta, which accounts for approximately 85 per cent of our total production. In addition, two other varieties are growing in volume:the Clery, which opens the season, and the Sonata, which is also an early variety. Darselect has been in decline over the last few years, and we expect to see smaller volumes of this variety in 2011.
