JUST behind the Rhorie-Mediterranee, the Grand Sud-Ouest is France's second-largest fruit and vegetable-producing region -harvesting around 24 percent of France's total yields each year, or 1.4m tonnes. The area, which spans from Bordeaux to Biarritzand east past Toulouse in France's south-west, is perhaps best known for its kiwif ruit, growing as it does around 66 per cent of the national crop. The lion's share is cultivated in the celebrated Adour belt close to Dax. The Grand Sud-Ouest is also the country's leading strawberry producer (supplying 50 per cent of tolaI production]; prune grower (70 per cent), carrot cultivator (55 per cent] and garlic producer (52 per cent], according to regional committee the BGSO.
