Fewer organic apples are expected to reach Europe from New Zealand during the 2010 season, according to Klaus Rehberg, responsible for purchasing organic products from New Zealand for Hamburg-based importer Port International. Mr Rehberg explains: "One reason is the lower crop yield in comparison to the previous year. Furthermore, global demand regarding apples from New Zealand has increased considerably." This year, he says, increasing volumes of organic apples have been delivered to the US due to the better price situation, while there has also been high demand from Asia for conventional fruit. This has contributed to a reduction in the supply of New Zealand apples to Europe by 20-25 percent.
