Although organic produce is not well known in the Middle East, Biomass has seen rapid growth in Lebanon and expects the rest of the region to follow. Based in Lebanon, Biomass, which specialises in growing and supplying organic products, faces the challenge of increasing awareness of such produce in the Middle East. "We are excited about the opportunities in the Middle East market," says the company's Mario Massoud. "We would like to establish our brand in the Gulf, but awareness of organic fruit andvegetables is still limited in the region." However, the evolution of the retail sector is on Biomass's side, according to Massoud, as increasing competition forces supermarkets and hypermarkets to place a greater emphasis on concerns such as quality and health. "Issues such as environmental responsibility and food safety are becoming more important in the region," he says, "and demand for organic products is on the rise as a result."
