The Middle East continues to offer expansion opportunities for leading US exports such as apples, pears and table grapes, with Dubai proving a key destination for large quantities of fresh fruit from the North American country. Middle East countries continue to grow in importance for US fresh produce exports, with sales on the up. According to the United States Department of Agriculture's (usda) Foreign Agricultural Service (fas) data, the value of fruit alone in 2010 set records for both volume (112,000 tonnes) and value (US$i29m) on a seasonally adjusted basis. In the fruit sector, US apples continue to dominate all other categories, led by Washington State. According to Washington industry sources, volumes to the Middle East increased by 25 per cent to more than 3.9m cartons during the 2010-11 season, with Dubai the leading destination, where shipments jumped by 40 per cent to over 1.67m cartons.
