In Italy, Health Technology Assessment (HTA) activities have been expanding since the early 1990s, but these activities tended to be poorly focused, uncoordinated and without defined priorities [1].Despite the reform initiated by Legislative Decree 502/92, intended to raise awareness of the need to control expenditure and promote efficiency, quality and patient satisfaction, the dissemination of individual technologies has been almost uncontrolled in many Italian regions. Unlike in many countries, HTA activities are performed by many different bodies instead of being concentrated in a dedicated unit.
