摘要

I want to write this foreword by describing my own state of the mind when approaching to write it. First, there is this deadline to meet, which is a stress for the mind. There is subconscious worry that I may forget it or miss the deadline. When I sit down to write it, I recognize that I have to write about a subject which is not my field of expertise. So, I do not feel sure about what to write. I could read up and then write, but will it make a difference? There is concern about how it will be perceived. You are now beginning to see what we all go through in dealing with matters in our daily life. Once we have dealt with the matter, we feel more relaxed when dealing with it for the second time. This is adaptation, which is the most important factor that determines the outcome of stress. Some of us are more adaptive, so we do not develop any negative consequences of stress. Those of us who are less adaptive fall victim to the stress. The adaptation to stress lies at the root of biological evolution. Biological processes are continuously evolving to adapt to the changing hostile environment and to reduce stress to the system. This ability to adapt is the fundamental feature of higher organisms and is also linked to longevity of the lifespan of a given species or individual. The complexity of the immune system, the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, and the formation of novel hippocampal circuitry in response to stress1 in higher organisms attests to this adaptiveness. The stress response at the individual cell level is better understood thanks to the development of modern biochemical and genetic tools. The response seems to follow the classic paradigm of Seyle's general adaptation syndrome.
