The geophysical prospecting in the Ancient City of Vat Phou (Southern Laos) was carried out under the UNESCO project "Zoning and Environmental Management plan of Vat Phou", with the aim to draw up a plan for the protection of archaeological areas. for this purpose, a quantitative evaluation of the results of geophysical prospecting is necessary, thereby creating the hypothesis not only for the existence of a structure, but also for its shape, dimension and state of conservation. In order to make a quantitative evaluation of the size of the remains, a computer system was used to calculate the geophysical models. This provided a solution for the direct problems of interpreting the potential field anomalies (magnetic and electric field), produced by bodies lying at a shallow depth. Through this method, a five-class classification is proposed on the basis of the two fundamental parameters of archaeological interpretation: size and geometric shape of the anomaly. To these five classes correspond also five archaeological risk factors. This term is used in the meaning of the likelihood that an excavation in a given area will lead to the discovery of substantial archaeological features. These values range from 0 (no reasonably sized anomaly with regular geometric shape) to 4 (sites who presented anomalies with particularly regular geometric shapes, and which had at least one objective confirmation). It must also be pointed out that this type of evaluation is not purely qualitative. In the first place because it takes into account the wave characteristics of the anomaly (amplitude and wavelength) and also because, it is based on the calculated (3D) models that fit the observed data best.
