摘要

For many years secondary sexual characters of males have been used to separate species and species groups in araneid spiders. In the keys and descriptions provided by Simon (1929), Wiehle (1931) and Locket & Millidge (1953), hooks and tubercles of theanterior coxae are mentioned, as are incrassate tibiae I and the presence of spurs and spines. Another character present in many species, the femoral groove at the proximal end of femur II, has been observed much less frequently. However, this groove was described as early as 1901 by F. O. Pickard-Cambridge, and is correlated with the hook-like apophy-sis at the posterior angle of leg coxa I. Detail about its function was given by Grasshoff (1968: p. 48, fig. 44), When studying mating in Araneus diadematus Clerck, he observed the coxal hook entering the groove, in full agreement with the suggestions of F. O. Pickard-Cambridge. In this way legs II become stabilised.
