Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is now established not only as a significant etiological factor but also as an important prognosticator in a number of tumors of the upper aerodigestive and anogenital tracts. Following initial identification of HPV16 in cervical carcinoma in 1983 [l], researchers have now confirmed the role of'high risk' papillomaviridae in vaginal (70% of cases), vulval (40%), anal (84%), penile (48%) and oropharyngeal (36%) carcinoma [2-4]. It appears that subtype, and to some extent viral load, have considerable influence on the outcome of these cancers [5,6].
