摘要

Stress represents a major complicating factor in neurological illness and disease. The connection between life-stress and disease onset/progression is acknowledged by both physicians and patients. In recent years, the study of the role of stress in neurological disease has intensified, and with it comes an appreciation for the true importance of stress management in a wide array of conditions. Older literature clearly links stress with a variety of mental illnesses, most notably depression, as discussed in the papers by Shively and Willard (2012-this issue) and Heim and Binder (2012-this issue). Added attention to stress as a co-morbid disease factor has uncovered links between stress and stroke outcome (Stuller et al, 2012-this issue); epilepsy (Danzer, 2012-this issue); visceral pain (Larauche, 2012-this issue); metabolic disorders and diabetes (Reagan et al., 2012-this issue); and Parkinson's Disease (Hemmerle et al., 2012-this issue). In the case of Parkinson's Disease, an identified syndrome since 1817 (Parkinson, 2002), clear stress-disease connections have been made only recently, and have led to increased attention to co-morbid stress-related symptoms (i.e., depression) as a major component of this and other diseases of the nervous system. Growing recognition of the importance of the stress-disease connection has fueled a marked surge in both preclinical and clinical research, highlighted in the reviews comprising this special issue.
