In our last Outlook report, we looked at technology and mining costs. This month, we extend our analysis of technologyand its impact on costs to processing. When it comes to downstream processing, such as smelting and steelmaking, mostof the technological gains have historically been made—and will continue to be developed—in the area of energyconsumption, given that these processes tend to be energy intensive. The figure below shows those processes that are themost energy intensive, and most exposed to energy prices, relative to the value of output produced.
