It seems fitting that my last report back as the Student Representative on the GSSA Council is about the Student Geocongress (SGC)-an annual congress organised by geoscience students for geoscience students. This year the SGC was held at the University of the Free Sate, in Bloemfontein-an ideal venue due to its central location in South Africa. The almost 100 delegates came from far and wide with Zambia, Zimbabwe and Ghana represented, as well as most South African Universities and Technikons. The SGC was kicked off by a pre-congress field excursion to the world famous Vredefort Dome, lead by Prof. Uwe Reimold, and to one of the Harmony Gold Mines. The SGC was officially opened on the Tuesday evening with a drinks party - special guest St.Anna and her fellow wines. We were welcomed to Bloemfontein and the SGC by Prof. Willem van der Westhuizen of UFS and the student organisers Annegret Lombard and Kaydy Pinetown.
