摘要

The South African Student Chapter of the Society of Economic Geologists (SAS-SEG) has only recently been re-established in South Africa. In the beginning it was based at the University of Cape Town (UCT); however, due to a lack of student participation and enthusiasm, it became dormant in the late 1990's. Just recently, students from Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg reactivated the chapter and moved the center of activity to Gauteng. Our goal is to encourage an increased knowledge of geology and its application to minerals exploration, mining, and other industries; to promote professionalism as it relates to the field of geology; and to provide a means of contact with the economic geology community at large. In order to achieve these goals, we regularly (i.e., twice a month) invite guest-speakers from industry and academic institutions to come and speak to the students. Additionally, we organize geological field trips, symposia, short courses and workshops aimed at our student population.
