From their earliest days, Geological Surveys have been central to the discovery and mapping of economically valuable minerals and the maintenance of databases and other records regarding these discoveries. Historically, many Geological Surveys have maintained and operated a range of facilities and equipment such as laboratories and geophysical units to support these geoscience mapping functions. Furthermore, they have served as repositories of geoscience information via map libraries, databases and, in recent years, GIS departments managing large volumes of spatial data and equipped to interpret data and generate spatial data products.
