摘要

ANYONE who has travelled on London's Tube during rush hour in the height of summer will know what a miserable experience it often is. Like a cross between all-in wrestling and a game of Twister, you find yourself crushed up against a stranger's sweaty armpit in the canned heat of a train some 60 m below ground. It is the world's oldest underground railway system, and for more than 100 years the clay surrounding its tunnels has been absorbing heat from trains and passengers. When it's hot enough to fry an egg on the pavement outside the station, the temperature inside the train underground can reach unbearable proportions.
