摘要

Cell migration plays a central role in both physiological as well as pathological processes. Well known examples of migration include embryonic development and the development of metastasis in cancer. Even today, little is known regarding the causes and the mechanisms controlling cell movement. Now, for the first time, the in vitro barrier test system from van Horssen et al. [1] allows quantitative insights into the interaction with associated growth factors and the extracellular matrix, without inflicting damage/wounding to cell monolayers and matrixes. The Okolab microscope incubator can be used to cultivate endothelial cells and fibroblasts for up to several weeks. Stable long-term temperatures together with an ideal microclimate provide optimal growth conditions. Observations of living cells offer new and exciting insights into migration patterns, cell morphology and the accompanying molecular alterations in the cell framework.
