The paper considers results of direct geological-geochemical observations of the modem Rainbow hydrothermal field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 36 deg 14 min N; 33 deg 54 min W) carried out from manned Mir submersibles during Cruises 41 and 42 of the R/V AkademikMstislav Keldysh in 1998-1999 and the data of laboratory studies of collected samples. The field lacks neovolcanic rocks, and the axial part of the rift is filled in with a serpentinite protrusion. Developed in this field are metalliferous sediments, as well as active and relict sulfide edifices composed of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, isocubanite, sphalerite, marcasite, pyrite, bornite, chalcosine, digenite, magnetite, anhydrite, rare troilite, wurtzite, millerite, and pentlandite with a high content of Cu and Zn ores. Sulfide ores are characterized by concentric-zoned textures. The temperature of hydrothermal solutions varies from 250 to 350 deg C over 35 min. The calculated chemical and isotopic composition of hydrothermal solution shows the elevated content of Cl, Ni, Co, CH_4, and H_2. The #delta#~(34)S_(H_2S), #delta#~(13)C_(CH_4), and #delta#~(13)C_(CO_2)) are equal to +2.4...+3.1, -15.2 11.2, and +1.0 4.0 (per thousand), respectively. Fluid inclusions are homogenized at temperatures of 140-360 deg C, whereas the salinity of the fluid varies from 4.2 to 8.5 wt %. The #delta#~(34)S values of sulfides range from + 1.3 to + 12.5(per thousand). The ~3He/~4He ratio in mineral-forming fluid contained in fluid inclusions from sulfides of the Rainbow field varies from 3.74 to 10.1 x 10~(-6). The hydrothermal activity in the area was shown to continue approximately 100 kyr. It is assumed that the fluid and sulfide edifices contain components from the upper mantle. The hypothesis of phase separation of the supercritical fluid that results in formation of brines is proposed. The hydrothermal activity is related to the tectonic, not volcanic, phase of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge evolution.
