The European pear (Pyrus communis) has a lot going for it, only few realize it; even though most orchard pears in the United States come from this species. Seldom will you hear conversations about fond memories of a favorite pear variety like you do with apples or peaches; however, a properly ripened 'Cornice' peat can hold its own against any peach. Pyrus communis is also known as the common pear and sometimes even wild pear. In fact, these pears were responsible for the creation of one of the world's largest mail-order fruit companies.
