Life forms from microbes to humans inhabit a very small portion of our planet with the sites selected by humans further restricted to locales with access to fresh water, food and space that aid general well-being. With increasing populations occupying more of the land surface some environments turned out to be less than salubrious and not only because of anthropogenic occupation and activities. Beyond the physical traumas, earthquakes and tsunamis, there are hazards that are hidden in natural environments. They often go unnoticed, remaining "silent" until a crisis forces a connection. The offenders may be natural earth materials, or anthro-pomorphically generated compounds, that are not easily nor casually detected, i.e. through color, taste or smell. Often widely distributed, and of exceedingly small size, detection and identification of these hazards in the geographic and geologic environments is non-trivial with many possible solutions, all expensive.
