The San Joaquin Valley Grape Symposium, presented by the University of California and the California Raisin Marketing Board, drew over 100 growers and PCAs from across the valley to Easton, Calif. on Wednesday, Jan. 9. Its mission was to address problems in the production of grapevines and the research that helps identify and control those problems. Steve Vasquez, UCCE Viticulture Farm Advisor for Fresno County, welcomed the crowd and kicked off the symposium with a presentation on delayed spring growth in grapevines (see the full story on page 6). Delayed spring growth, or DSG, is not a new problem in the industry, however it was more prevalent in the spring 2000 growing season in Kern and Madera counties than in years past. Vasquez said many symptoms of DSG included poor and uneven bud break, stunted growth, smaller flower clusters or complete abortion, failure and ultimately death of individual buds and sucker growth at the base or head of the vine. "These symptoms vary in degree of expansion," said Vasquez.
