According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), asbestos is responsible for an estimated 4,000 deaths each year and is the single greatest cause of work-related deaths in the UK. The substance could be present in any building that was built or refurbished before the year 2000 and is often found in external wall cladding and internal wall panelling, particularly around windows. Asbestos is also often found in window soffits.
