LAUNCHING HIS NEW book at a London lecture, Amartya Sen, the philosopher and Nobel-winning economist, asked the audience to consider a story in which three children are fighting for one flute. One child made the flute, another is the only one who knows how to play it, and the third is so poor he has no other toys to play with. How should one decide who gets the flute?It's a difficult decision because all three claims are supported by different but arguably equally valid types of reasoning. But which is best?
