UK GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES to reduce car crime have encouraged the owners of vehicles to take steps to protect themselves. TV adverts, various government leaflets and police advice on the matter abound. It is probably fair to say that the consumer is getting the message, but what can they do about it? The fact is that entry through a normal toughened glass window to steal contents from a car is like the proverbial 'taking candy from a baby' for the practised thief and is therefore the preferred method. Laminated side glasses, we are told, represent the best long-term solution to this problem, with the emphasis on long term. Today, however, only a tiny percentage of new vehicles are fitted with laminated side glass, and it will probably be several years before this solution becomes generally available. So this leads to an obvious question: What about all of those existing vehicles, millions of them, that only have vulnerable toughened side glasses? How can motorists bring their own cars up to the desired intrusion resistance that laminated glass promises?
