Can a proven recipe for success in fields as diverse as athletics to computer programming also work in veterinary medicine? Implementing checklists has improved results in complex processes from flying jumbo passenger jets to constructing high-rise buildings in which minute mistakes or forgotten tasks can be catastrophic. Implementing a simple checklist in human medicine decreased central-line infections 66% and post-operative pain according to Atul Gawande in his recent work The Checklist Manifesto.Checklists help to ensure consistency and completeness by compensating for potential limits of human memory and attention. Most items are ridicute simple, thus ridiculously easy to forget. For example, in one study remembering to consistently elevate apatient's head to a specific angle decreased the prevalence of pneumonia bv 25%.
