Ludwig Merckie now holds only 24.42 percent in German cement maker HeidelbergCement (HC) after he sold around half of his shares and after a capital hike was carried out, according to the company. Previously Ludwig Merckle, the son of Adolf Merckle, owned 72 percent in HeildelbergCement. The billionaire Adolf Merckle killed himself in January after amassing a mountain of debts. The proceeds from the sale, totalling some Euro1.65bn may help Merckle cut his debts - estimated at around Euro8bn - so that he will have to sell fewer parts of his corporate empire than earlier thought. Merckle's group includes generic drug maker Ratiopharm and Pharmaceuticals wholesaler Phoenix. HC itself amassed more than Euro 11 bn in debts in the course of buying the UK's Hanson.
