Pharmaline and Cosmaline Industries are two of the first four companies in Lebanon to achieve ISO 14001 certification. In addition, the pharmaceutical and cosmetics manufacturing organizations gained ISO 9001 certification at the same time, in mid-1999.Author Rabih El Darwiche, Quality and Environmental Manager for both companies within the Malia Holding Group, outlines the DELTA "Good Housekeeping Practices" which help maintain their environmental management systems in accordance with ISO 14001 disciplines, and in conjunction with Occupational health and Safety (OHS) requirements. He considers quality, environmental protection and pollution prevention, and OHS to be the three vital cornerstones of industrial management systems.The two companies have already seen numerous benefits from standardizing their quality and environmental management systems. In the global context, the author sees standardization of particular value in support of exports, and internally, he notes greater cross fertilization of ideas, clearer definition of responsibilities within and between departments, and continual improvement through regular internal audits and subsequent corrective actions.
