The cover of this book is predominantly black-and-white, with a touch of blue. Those who have participated in the development of ISO 14001 might decide, having read the book's contents, that the black-and-white corresponds to the arguments of the authors, while the blue might translate the developers' mood on learning that ISO 14001 is of little value to anyone.The title, ISO 14001: a missed opportunity for sustainable global industrial development, nails the authors' colours firmly to the mast. Riva Krut and Harris Gleckman are not exactly supporters of ISO 14001. A complete list of the ills they lay at the door of the standard, and of its developer. ISO (International Organisation for Standardization) would be rather a long one, but summing up and paraphrasing the main ones gives the following.- 150 14001 is not the environ-mental management system (EMS) standard, but only one, and an ineffective one at that;- it was developed in too much haste:- ISO's standards' development processes are undemocratic, favour industry at the expense of government and public policy makers, and virtually exclude developing countries;- because ISO 14001 does not set performance levels, it does not improve environmental performance;- it allows organizations to wriggle out of their environmental responsibilities by requiring only a commitment to compliance with environmental legislation, and not actual compliance;- it is not being taken up by governments or business users because it does not produce results.
