FORWARD CONTRACTS TO PLAY A GREATER ROLE WITHIN IRISH FEED SECTORGlanbia's guaranteed milk payment scheme went live at the beginning of January. It offers farmers a base price of 30.25C/L (including VAT) at reference milk constituents of 3.6% butterfat and 3.3% protein.The measure will also provide farmer suppliers with an opportunity of agreeing price-based feed contracts moving forward. Where compounds are concerned producers will be able to avail of a ?10/t subsidy, tying in with their contracted milk supply arrangements.Agri Food and Biosciences' Institute (AFBI) economist Myles Patton believes that forward contracts will play a key role in mitigating the impact of volatility within all the agri food sectors. Speaking at a recent conference in Belfast, he confirmed that there may be a greater need for risk management tools within peripheral food producing regions, such as the island of Ireland.
