With increased globalization of industries and markets, there has been greater acceptance of harmonized international standards as a vehicle to improve competition and eliminate technical barriers to trade. The WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement mandates the use of international standards as the basis of technical regulations. Recognition of the importance of globally accepted approaches to voluntary standards is reflected in the wide acceptance of the TBT Code of Good Practice for the Preparation, Adoption and Application of Standards.
