Through a discussion of global markets needs, general agreement was reached that the desired characteristic of an International Standard is one that can be used/implemented as broadly as possible by all affected industries and other stakeholders in countries around the world. At the same time, there was overall consensus that it is possible not only to formulate truly global standards-take, for instance, the worldwide use of ISO 9000 (Quality management) and ISO 14000 (Environmental management)-but that such standards provide real added value in today's interconnected and interdependent global economy.
