摘要

Some readers will remember the title of this month's edition of Facts from Figures as the title of a government White Paper published in 1974. Much of the debate over how much food the UK could -or should - produce stemmed from concern about nationalsecurity and was founded, in particular, in the memories of the First and Second World Wars when the UK's food supply was threatened by the depredations of German submarines. Since then, the debate has moved on with the discussion more directed at the apparently competing interests in the countryside as a producer of food or as an environment to be preserved at all costs. Now, with increasing demand for the raw materials that go into food production from the emerging industrial giants of Asia and elsewhere, the focus of debate is moving back towards food security. Roger Dean has been looking at the food and, in particular, at the livestock products produced in the UK and their contribution to consumption.
