The war in Guatemala lasted thirty-six years. Those familiar with Guatemala remember the brutality: 45,000 persons 'disappeared', more than 600 highland villages wiped off the map, 200,000 Guatemalan refugees in Mexico, more than 1 million Guatemalans internally displaced. Also memorable were the official denials that such atrocities were occurring.
