For optimum plant production andproduct quality the light intensityand light spectrum have to headapted to the needs of the plantsat every moment. For sustainablegreenhouse production the use offreely available sunlight should heoptimised first. Short-term possibilities are firstly the development ofoptimum diffuse materials toimprove plant production and,secondly, heat reflecting materialsto allow protected plantproduction to take place in hotclimates and in seasons with highirradiation. Before looking at the light transmission of a covering, first distinguish between diffuse and direct light. Direct light reachesthe earth surface without being reflected. On clear days most of the radiation isdirect light. If the sunrays are firstlyabsorbed or reflected in the atmospherethey are spread and then reach the earth'ssurface as diffuse light. On cloudy daysmost of the radiation is scattered on smallwater drops in the atmosphere whichresults in diffuse light.
