摘要

This paper examines the decline in Food Stamp Program participation of low-income households in the USA during 1994-98. Data were obtained from a survey that assessed the food security status of US households in 1995-99, through a series of questions about food-related behaviours, experiences, and conditions known to characterize households having difficulty meeting their food needs. Results of the survey show that increasing incomes reduced the number of eligible households for food stamps and contributed substantially to the decline in food stamp use. Food security increased because of higher income. However, there is a rising proportion of low-income households who either did not know they were eligible for food stamps or found it more difficult or less socially acceptable to get them.
