This paper focuses on USDA estimates showing that imports' share of the total quantity of food consumed domestically (including alcoholic beverages) rose from an average of 7.5% for 1979-94 and 7.4% for 1995 to 9.1% for 1998 and 1999. The reasons behind this trend are discussed including: the strong US economy which makes imports more affordable; trade agreements and technological advances; the availability of out-of-season crops and new varieties; and the demand for novel, nutritious, convenient foods. Imports of individual animal and crop products are analysed.
