BASF says it wants to use a byproduct of its controversial transgenic potato variety in animal feed despite the European Commission's insistence that authorization is for industrial use only. The decision on whether or not to authorize the BASF potato, genetically engineered for higher starch content, fell to the commission after ED agriculture ministers failed to reach a qualified majority July 16 for or against authorization.
