The Federal Environmental Court of Parana, which has statewide jurisdiction on environmental issues but issues rulings with nationwide implications, has guaranteed biotech corn producers the right to continue cultivating transgenic corn in the state of Parana and, by extension, elsewhere in the nation.Three advocacy groups, including Brazil's consumer protection institute (IDEC) operating in Parana, requested a ban by the Federal Environmental Court of Parana on transgenic products "until effective coexistence norms between GM maize and transgenic maize are established." The groups alleged that there had been documented occurrences of contamination of conventional corn plantations, even in situations when producers applied the required isolation distances and planting systems required by Brazil's National Biosafety Commission (CTNBio).
